What is Shaare Shalom?

We hire excellent Jewish educators as classroom teachers and specialists who teach and challenge our students throughout the year.  Our curriculum spirals through your children’s education throughout the years.  This means that students and educators will investigate the topics of Prayer, Hebrew, Values, Holidays, Tanakh, Israel, and History in all grades and sophistication in order to achieve different levels of achievement and understanding.  Special emphasis will be given to Synagogue and Hebrew skills so that students feel comfortable at their congregation or anywhere they may go in their lives and become active participants in the Jewish community.

Shaare Shalom offers many learning opportunities throughout the year to many different age groups.  Our school begins in pre-kindergarten and continues through twelfth grade.  All grades meet Sundays from 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. at BSKI.   Throughout the year we offer Shabbat and Holiday programs for our families to connect and learn together.  This programming is made possible by a grant provided by the Crown Foundation.  Our third through sixth grade students also meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:15 – 6:00 p.m. at Shaare Zedek.  Lastly, our second through seventh grade students have the opportunity to attend city-wide Conservative Shabbatonim.

Our high school juniors and seniors work as madrichim (leaders) in our religious school.  The program allows students to earn community service hours for their secular schools as well as continue to make relationships and build on the learning from previous years at Shaare Shalom.  Students work as teachers “in training” weekly and will meet several times throughout the year to continue on their path as lifelong learners.   I understand that this is a lot of information.  Take a minute and look at the chart below for a breakdown of requirements for each grade and don’t hesitate to be in touch or schedule a personal family meeting and school tour.

If your child attends a Jewish Day school during the school year, then you are encouraged to attend all Shabbat, Holiday and Family education programs so that we can celebrate, study and pray together as a community.  Sixth grade Day School students will also be expected to participate in their congregation’s sixth grade Pre- B’nai Mitzvah program.

Jewish learning in not only for the young – it is a life-long journey.  Shaare Shalom students and families connect and engage to take that journey together.  I look forward to getting to know you and your children.
