As some of you know, Rabbi Fasman is battling Cancer. His sermon for Rosh Hashannah delt with his life with cancer. Alice Fasman delivered the sermon, because one of the things of living with cancer is that Rabbi Fasman cannot be in crouds, like a full sancuatary. It was a moving sermon.

One of the treatments for cancer is chemotharapy. For those who don't know, chemotharapy drugs almost kill the patent while killing the cancer. They are, by them selves toxic. Chemotharapy patients frequently need transfusions of either whole blood or blood platles when they have a chemotherapy treatment.

Blood and blood products, like platelets cannot be manufactured in a lab. They come from donors, volunteer donors. Without the needed platelets on hand, a patient cannot have the chemotherapy. That is donors. a single cancer patient needs platelets from two or three donors each time they recieve chemotherapy.

Many people have asked the rabbi, "How can I help?" He answered from the pulpit, "You can donate blood or platelets."

Pheresis is the process of donating only platelets. It takes about 90 minutes. Whole blood takes an hour. The screening is simple and strictly confidental. The links below have all of the information on donating. Take some time. Give a gift no checkbook can match.

As the summer draws to a close, we are all filled with great excitement as we look forward to the new beginnings of Autumn. Our children anticipate the beginning of a new school year, new friends, new teachers and new knowledge. I am excited for the school year to begin as the plans, faculty and changes in curriculum all come into shape.

The first days of school are on September 11th and 12th. Hope to see all of you at the Pancake Breakfast on Opening morning 9:15 – 9:50 a.m., sponsored by the Men’s Clubs of both BSKI and Shaare Zedek. School begins at 10:00 with Havdallah! The day is going to be filled with fun opportunities to learn together, meet the teachers, and see friends.

Thanks to a generous Crown Family Foundation Grant, this year we will have special occasions to create, learn and have fun together. The grant provides Shaare Shalom with resources and opportunities to encourage and inspire our families to celebrate living Jewish lives.

This Sunday, we kick off with our Tallit Kehillatit, Community Tallit project. We will create a special school tallit, to be used by our students and families when we come together for special blessings and ceremonies. This project is one more step in creating our Shaare Shalom Community. Each family’s vision will be combined together to form a shared Shaare Shalom vision. Our Tallit will be made of fabric squares, stitched together. Each family will create their own 10-inch square. We have chosen a few themes around which to build your own square. Your Shabbat table is a wonderful place to discuss ideas:

  • Tikkun Olam – Repairing the World.
  • Chesed – Acts of lovingkindness.
  • Shalom v’Ahava – Peace and Love – please think beyond the peace signs and hearts.

You are encouraged to sketch your family square prior to Sunday. Don’t worry; we’ll have extra sketch paper for you if needed.

Thank you in advance for your involvement and cooperation!
Lehitra’ot, see you all Sunday!

B’Shalom,
Anita Kraus
